The Western
Adventure Series...
Wild Bill
Hickock

Starring Guy Madison (left) and
Andy Devine
On the Mutual Network, at first
sponsored by Kelloggs... Wild Bill Hickock was a popular cowboy hero
to many children. Andy Devine played "Jingles", Wild Bill's
sidekick as the pair rode throughout the west becoming involved in
one adventure after another.
Guy Madison and Andy Devine played their characters on television as
well as on radio. The radio version was heard from 1951 to
1956. They were up against some tough competition as Roy
Rogers and The Cisco Kid were also heard both on
radio and seen on TV at the same time.
Tonight, Wild Bill rides his horse "Buckshot" and Jingles is aboard
"Joker" as they tackle the problem of Guns Across the Border
from March 12, 1954. (25 minutes)

A New Series for
Portsmouth Community Radio
Audio Theatre...
Defense Attorney

Starring Mercedes McCambridge
Defense Attorney premiered
on July 6, 1951 as a weekly half-hour series on Friday nights on ABC
radio. The first 67 episodes were performed and recorded at
ABC's KECA Studios in Hollywood. There were 75 episodes
produced all together, of which only 13 remain in circulation.
The radio series ended on December
30, 1952 and was scheduled to move to television, however those
plans eventually fell through.
Mercedes McCambridge, an Oscar-winning actress, played the role
of Defense Attorney Martha Ellis Bryant. The show also
featured Sheldon Leonard, John Stevenson, Tony Barrett, and Peter
Leeds in supporting roles.
The production of a radio program
with a female star playing a Defense Attorney was a fresh, novel
approach to the legal dramas that were cropping up both on radio and
television.
Tonight's premier episode for WSCA-LP
106.1 FM is entitled "The Case of Mike Tully" and was aired on
August 31, 1951.
This is an excellently written and
acted program... listen in and hear for yourselves.

THE
WHISTLER

Starring Bill Foreman as "The
Whistler"
"I am the Whistler and I know many
things, for I walk by night. I know many strange tales hidden in the
hearts of men and women who have stepped into the shadows. Yes, I
know the nameless terrors of which they dare not speak."
In the world of The Whistler, fate
has a few twists and turns for the thoughtless acts of the foolish.
Those listeners who enjoy tales of mystery and terror will surely
enjoy the world of The Whistler.
Bill Forman is both the host and
narrator of the program and the haunting opening song with 37
notes was whistled by Dorothy Roberts weekly for 13 years.
The Whistler was heard on the air from 1942-54.
Tonight's episode is entitled
Murder over Burma and was originally aired on February 4,
1951.

The radio precursor to TV's
"COPS"... this show features actual cases with real police officers
on duty in Culver City, CA.
There is no music, sound effects, or actors.
Police reporter Don Reid rode in a prowl car on the night shift with
officers. While wearing a hidden microphone (inside a flashlight),
he captures the sounds and voices of real life drama. The
names were changed to protect the identities, but everything else in
this gripping series is real.

Ed Wynn as

King Bubbles
Original Air Date:
February 29, 1945
Ed Wynn's Happy Island,
sponsored by Borden's Milk with it's famous logo "Elsie
the Cow" often a show regular....was a place where singers,
comedians, King Nasty, and Worry Park could all be found.
An interesting side note about the program... Ed Wynn, an expert and
veteran vaudevillian, insisted on performing the show in full
make-up, costume, with a complete
stage set and before a live audience. The show was cancelled
by ABC six months after just six months on the air.
Gunsmoke - Dodge Podge

With William Conrad as Matt
Dillon and Norman McDonnell directing and producing this series, it
became the standard by which all other westerns were measured.
Incredible sound effects, music, scripts, and acting ... what more
could one ask? This series captured millions of listeners with
each and every broadcast. Don't miss the chance to hear this
episode.
Tonight: DODGE PODGE
Original Air Date: 6/9/57

The Roy Rogers Show

Rabies
Original Air Date: March
26, 1953
The Roy Rogers Show ran
from 1944 until 1955 on the radio, broadcasting about 350
episodes!
The cast included: Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, Gabby Hayes, Joseph
Kearns, Bob Nolan, Pat Brady, Frank Hemingway, "Sons of the
Pioneers", Trigger ( yup, Roy's Palomino horse!)
By 1938 Roy Rogers had established
himself as a movie and singing star and when he came to radio with
his second wife, Dale Evans.. they made the perfect cowboy-cowgirl
couple. Each week they saved some poor soul from the con men
in the old west.
The theme song? It was "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" though most
people probably remember Dale singing, "Happy Trails to You" at the
end of each show.

A very funny sitcom that was on the air from 1947-54.
Irma Peterson (Marie Wilson) was an innocent, bewildered,
dim-bulb of a stenographer who was Jane Stacy's (Cathy Lewis)
roommate. Jane was a level-headed, goal-oriented
business
woman who was in love with a millionaire.

many very humorous adventures
Hans Conreid and John Brown (Digger O'Dell on The Life of Riley)
made up
a strong supporting cast.
Rating: 4.5/5 Stars
