Americans celebrate VE Day - May 7, 1945

It is only appropriate that on the 60th anniversary of VE Day, we commemorate the moment with a clip from President Truman's announcement to the nation that Germany had unconditionally surrendered to the allies on May 7, 1945.

It is notable to hear President Truman say that his only wish was "that  Franklin D. Roosevelt  had lived to witness this day."

The war on the Eastern Front had been a horrible experience.  More than half the military deaths of the war took place there. mainly due to the fighting between Germany and Russia.

Germany lost 3,200,000 soldiers and Russia suffered
more than 6,000,0000 casualties.

United States casualties totaled more than 400,000, and the
British and the French each lost 250,000 soldiers.

Worldwide, an estimated 55,000,0000 people lost their lives
as a result of the Second World War.

After May 7, 1945, Europe lay in ruins.  Determined not to let it happen a third time, the Allied forces divided Germany into tow separate states, east and west.  Yet, this dividing of German would itself become the focus of a new type of global conflict...the cold war...for decades to come.

Now that victory was won in the west, the daunting task of winning a victory in the east was to continue until August 15, 1945... when Japan surrendered.

To the members of the Greatest Generation of Americans who fought and died in World War II...
God Bless each and every one of you.

America, nor the world can ever repay you for your sacrifices...
but we honor and recognize that you made them for us.
